So, a bit of news here. The National AIMS Awards nominations came out Sunday. THink of them like the Tonys for Amateur Musicals in Ireland.

I was involved in three shows this year. "Our House" which I directed, "Little Shop of Horrors" for which I was Technical Manager (Sets, Lighting and Sound), and "Phantom of the Opera" which I directed.

"Our House" got 4 nominations, including Best Stage Management, Best Actor (for my son Conor), Best Director for myself, and Best Overall Show.
"Little Shop" also got 4. Best House Management, Best Visuals, Best Male Vocal, and Best Actress.
"Phantom" got 2. Best Stage Management and Best Technicals.

All in all a pretty manor haul for me and my friends. Gonna have a great weekend in June at the Awards Ceremony, but looking at the competition I don't expect to win many of them.

I've only ever seen Cabaret as the movie with Liza Minelli, and even then if I saw more than the Money part, I don't remember it.

But YouTube decided I need to see Money with Alan Cumming, and I'm obsessed. It's one of the most brilliantly disturbing things I've seen on stage. The recording is a terrible quality, which somehow makes it better.

Sadly, a full recording of this production doesn't appear to exist. There's a bootleg shortened version, and videos of musical numbers, probably also bootleg.

The current production running in London and on Broadway is stunningly dark. Almost harrowing to watch. Its an incredibly powerful piece of theatre and very timely right now. I saw it with Eddie Redmayne in the Emcee role, with Jessie Buckley as Sally Bowles and they were quite simply incredible. Disturbing but incredible.

I watched Cabaret about a year ago. It's darker/more chilling than I remember it. Timely. Unfortunately.

From the bits I've seen, the Cumming version went for Cabaret went for minimum glitz. You leave your troubles outside not for a pretty shiny fantasy, but for the fantasy of unrestrained depravity. Except you don't.

I do know that it wouldn't hit me this hard if the times weren't what they are.

We were talking about going to NYC, and I am seriously considering trusting in Pfizer and going to see the show with Adam Lambert.

the MC remove his coat to reveal a camp prisoner uniform with patches for being Jewish and gay, while others have him in a full Nazi uniform. Honestly both are valid and I don't know which is more devastating.
