circumflex
. After that, the rest fell into place.

There were so many of them in the grid, I thought the theme was going to be "different ways to pronounce the letter c" or something.

Hidden text.
The first one I got was "grave", and I then started to look for words with a death theme. :D Then I got "acute" and everything fell into place.

The perfect puzzle for a language geek.

Let the other societies take the skilled, the hopefuls, the ambitious, the self-confident. He’d take the whining resentful ones, the ones with a bellyful of spite and bile, the ones who knew they could make it big if only they’d been given the chance. Give him the ones in which the floods of venom and vindictiveness were dammed up behind thin walls of ineptitude and lowgrade paranoia.

Yeah, yesterday's Strands was different. I had to use hints as I wasn't getting it. If not heard the word circumflex before, I think we called it 'accent aigu' in French class.

No, that's the "acute accent" in English. (I think acute was one of yesterday's words)

Circumflex in French is circonflexe. Example: "Je vais être en retard."
