Re: Games, Riddles, Puzzles, and other Distractions
Has anyone ever seen a crossword puzzle with clues that refer to "[number] under"? For example, for the answer "QUITSCOLDTURKEY", the clue was "Suddenly stops eating Thanksgiving leftovers? (ending with a one under, three times in a row)." One across was STOAT and one down was STOP. There are several such "under" clues in the puzzle, and in some cases the number in question only has a down word associated with it. I can't make any sense of it, and the word "under" doesn't appear to be part of standard crossword lingo...

No, it was one from the Vox archives (October 26, 2019). They make it difficult to link directly to a specific puzzle, but here's the solved grid, along with another "under" clue:RoseMorninStar wrote: ↑Mon Apr 28, 2025 10:46 pmI'm not positive I understand but I've seen some weird crosswords trying to (stretch) connections. Was this the (full size) NYT crossword?

Re: Games, Riddles, Puzzles, and other Distractions
You're correct, Rose; good catch. 26 across "ends in a one under", i.e a birdie. 42 across "ends in a two under"--an eagle. And 55 across "ends in a one under, three times in a row," which is apparently called a turkey in golf lingo (I hadn't heard that one before). The title was "Let's Check the Scorecard," which I suppose was meant to be a clue, but
. One of those puzzles where the meta-clues just serve as a distraction.
