Nature Pics
Re: Nature Pics
It was funny timing; I've known about their powers of flight more or less forever, but I don't think I'd ever witnessed them before. They certainly don't look like things that should be capable of flight when you see them on the ground, and that doesn't change much when you see them in the air.

On a somewhat related note, this is a turkey:
And this is a turkey skeleton:
If you'd never seen any kind of bird and all you had was the latter, would you ever in a million years guess that the living animal resembled the former? This is what paleontologists are up against with dinosaurs.- Voronwë the Faithful

It's a Stellar's Jay, and we think it might be the one that has built a nest in our storage shed that is missing its door (who we have nicknamed "Stella").

Re: Nature Pics
I didn't bother to take photos of turkey turkeys, but I can settle a debate about them flying if there's still one. Three of them took off one by one and flew off into the tree tops at respectable speeds.
And we saw a bobcat cross the road in front of us. I didn't have time for a photo, only "OMG a bobcat!"

Re: Nature Pics
Today's flying friend (I'm very surprised I got this good a shot from so far away). This red shouldered hawk was flying over downtown Santa Cruz

I saw a mink yesterday, but it was gone before I could take a picture.
