I think the clue was fair, I only log in briefly and then usually are able to solve straight away, this one, I copied and pasted to 'word' and kept going back to it, but I am not very good at Anagrams, and thats my weak point and downfall.

I wouldn't say I 'do' a lot of cryptics, I attempt a lot, and I enjoy thinking laterally, but some of these have thrown me, just because my mind is elsewhere right now :)

(Today we were expecting to hear if they were rebuilding our factory after the fire in September, the announcement has been put off until tomorrow, its been along 10 weeks waiting. I knew when I kept my job in the redundancy round earlier this month, I had only survived the 'first cull'. But its still darn hard. So I have immersed myself in checking on this thread and put my brain to work trying to solve problems instead of dwelling on 'my big problem') :) Life is never easy, but why does it have to get so gosh darn hard?

anyhoot enough personal stuff... a clue if you please :D

we will have to put our thinking caps on then.

gongs are another word for medals I think,
and I am guessing the end answer is the name of a Japanese city.

It is one of the four-letter ones in your list, Mith. And TIGG is also on the right lines.

OBE is Order of the British Empire, but how is K = two?

A thousand gongs would maybe have been better. :D

But I guess the equation of gong=medal is the bit no one non-Commonwealth could get? At least, I don't get it. :D

There's OBE and KBE, yes? So KOBE would contain two of them.

Can't get vison's cacophonous items yet. Have to think about it.

Vision,

is it:

Cymbals?

they make a discordant sound, they could be refered to as symbols,
anagraming items, gave me 'smite' so I thought of discordant musical instruments that the player would smite..and this was it.

and of course we were 'talking gong's when you came up with it.. :P

I was thinking cymbals too, or perhaps symbols.

It is KOBE it isn't so much KBE and OBE, but simply K on it's own for knighthood (one can speak of getting a K), together with OBE. That's what I thought people would be unfamiliar with: both the use of gong for medal, and particular British decorations.

you never counted on this Kiwi thinking that way straight off. :P

It was a great clue. I enjoyed the puzzle,(as did my work mates who I co-opted in to it.) I got Medal and Japanese city very quickly but was undone on the actual awards for a while.

Oh! I'm still working vison's clue over in my mind ... cacophonous items? (7)

TIGG and Aravar were guessing cymbals/symbols but vison hasn't answered yet.
