I have a sneaking suspicion that this one is from the Sil. Am I right?

Not The Silmarillion. Not The Hobbit. Not The Lord of the Rings.

The answer is right in front of you.
"Spirits in the shape of hawks and eagles flew ever to and from his halls; and their eyes could see to the depths of the seas, and pierce the hidden caverns beneath the world."

That's the nicest thing anyone has said to me around here in a long time. :)

I'm back! But these fiendishly clever clues have stumped me.

I'll go away again and think of something nice to say to Voronwë.
“There, peeping among the cloud-wrack above a dark tor high up in the mountains, Sam saw a white star twinkle for a while. The beauty of it smote his heart, as he looked up out of the forsaken land, and hope returned to him. For like a shaft, clear and cold, the thought pierced him that in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach.”

I would guess it but then I'd have to come up with a quote and I only remember the really, really obvious ones anymore. :P

"Death!"

Hint: One word is unchanged.

Okay, here goes:

'But very bright were the stars upon the margin of the world, when at times the clouds about the West were drawn aside.'

That sig quote and Starry Night are probably my favorite such combination ever, going back to 2001. Every time I see an image of the painting, I feel like smiling, because it makes me think of such a dear friend. :)

And now, one that's easier than the first one I posted, but a little harder than Voronwë's last:

Sadly all the false must be maintained.

That's got to be the greatest translated quote of all time!

Is it spoken by a presidential candidate?

Sounds that way, doesn't it? Or maybe from the Benghazi hearings today. . . .

The person who says it can't believe his/her eyes.

Is it from the time when Gandalf comes back as Gandalf the White?

No.

But it's said to Gandalf.

Aha - you're referring to Bingo Baggins, brother of Bungo and early prototype of Frodo. That's what you're alluding to, right?

Here's a new one:
