Well, I just spent a very pleasant couple of hours exploring this long posting. Thanks for the images, I have added quite a few to my jump drive.

Okay, here's a picture of my violets from April. I thought they were very pretty:

And you were right!
“There, peeping among the cloud-wrack above a dark tor high up in the mountains, Sam saw a white star twinkle for a while. The beauty of it smote his heart, as he looked up out of the forsaken land, and hope returned to him. For like a shaft, clear and cold, the thought pierced him that in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach.”

I think

I will be spending a lot of time in this thread. Here are some pictures I have:

So many to choose from but I'll begin with what in North America I consider to be the Falls of Rauros. Not sure if I'm doing this right so I'll try it.

Great image of some spectacular falls! Where are they, ArathornJax?

My Amon Rûdh

Not a huge hill, but I like how it looks in both spring and fall. This is a hike that is about 15 min. from my home (maybe 20 min).

Meeting Elves in Woody End

This is where I image Frodo, Sam and Pippin perhaps walked through Woody End with Gildor

Approaching the Ford at Rivendell

Post by ArathornJax »

Guess I should say that wherever I go, I try to see if something strikes me as related to a scene in LOTR. This is not my image of the Ford of Bruinen (I have one I'll drive/hike to and take a picture and share) but this one I really like and it makes me think of going to the Ford or perhaps after the Ford . If not, I just like it:

Hope

I call this hope as I have been going through some medical issues of late and I was still able to get out and get a short hike in. Got this picture and I really liked it.

You live in a wonderful state for that, ArathornJax! I do too (Oregon), and I do the same sometimes (although I'm no photographer, so I can't share what I see). Oregon even has a pretty good Mordor. . . .

I am a native son of Oregon (born in Portland and raised there until 6). I still have family living in the Portland/Vancouver area and my wife is from Washington. I'm currently in Utah which has many positives and some drawbacks but that is the same no matter where I have lived.

I also love the Crater of the Moons in Idaho for a good landscape for Mordor, though both Oregon and Washington (St. Helens) might have a good claim for Mordor landscapes.

St. Helens right after the explosion, most definitely! It's come back amazingly since then. (I was in college in eastern Washington at the time and we got the full darkness-at-noon, raining-ash experience.)

Oregon's got some big lava flows, including one of solid obsidian, that make great Mordor images.

ArathornJax, I think you are going to fit in here nicely. :)

and having spent a good day reviewing the boards I really like it here. It is small, some really good in depth discussions I know I will really like it here. Now time to put some grades in and then get a presentation ready for a consulting job in two weeks, and get ready for a final procedure (I hope) so I can get healthy again.

BTW, feel free to use AJ.

Oh, good, I was wondering how you'd like your name shortened, AJ. :D

Your pictures are lovely!

I also enjoy imagining scenes from LotR. Ohio has a lot of woodlands, so I can imagine some pretty decent Lothlórien, Mirkwood, or even Rivendell scenes. (Being an Elf, this pleases me immensely! :D)

I'm sure I've posted this before, but this place in Hocking Hills reminded me of Rivendell:

(I thought I had some more pics uploaded into Photobucket, but it seems that I do not. :( )

Well, Ohio is also good for some Dead Marshes imaginings.

(I just need to take the time to upload some more pics.)

Craters is a good choice. I have visited Mt St. Helens, but it was years ago. Ever been to Hells Half Acre? Not a bad choice for Emun Muil if you had to pick a spot in the US for a representation.
