Oh!!! Well I am sure there is Japanese dub with english Sub out there somewhere.

Do you think it would have been better with more European voices?

I guess I am just used to that sort of thing. (After enduring al lthat anime pushing from my friends) I mean for Bleach, it's set in Japan and all the voices are American accent dubs (but I do watch the sub, with the original Japenese dialogue), and I guess I never realized the incongruency. Also I realize with the voice dub the point is to make it easier for those who may not want to read subtitles (just like when a film is made about French history or something yet all the actors speak English you know? )

I guess you wouldn't be interested in an anime version of Romeo and Juliet eh? (Apparently it's highly anticipated.)

Holbytla wrote:wonders if Speed Racer and Kimba the White Lion would be considered anime

I have seen some. Some I like and some I don't.
I think Prim is too old though. :P
Kimba the White Lion was created by Osamu Tezuka, who is considered the father of Manga and Anime.

Asking if Kimba the White Lion is Anime is almost like asking if Mickey Mouse is Disney.

(The real debate is how much of Kimba was stolen for "The Lion King", which has many scenes, plot elements and images lifted straight from Tezuka's work. Disney officially denies this. Many Japanese Manga and Anime creators believe it to be so, and have asked for an acknowledgement. See postscript)

Tezuka's work ranges from the the simple to the very complex. I am currently about 3/4 of the way through his 3000 page manga of the life of Buddha, which is very, very good.

Kimba vs. Lion King

The Wikipedia entry has a good summary of the controversy as well:

Kimba the White Lion Wiki

As noted in the Wikipedia article, in 1994 over 1100 Japanese Manga and Anime artists signed a letter to Disney on this issue:

Letter to Disney

Roy Disney in 1993 in an online chat on Prodigy had this to say about the upcoming Lion King project:

However, many key Disney animators dispute the connection, despite the many similarities.

When I attempted to quote the text of Roy Disney's Prodigy chat I got this message:

For some reason, the word "to" followed by a colon and then a space, is considered a security risk. Here is the text of the Roy Disney Prodigy chat:
TOPIC: ROY DISNEY
TIME: 07/19 8:23 PM

TO:! JILL SAUDER (JKFG91B)
FROM: ROY DISNEY (STAR99B)
SUBJECT: "ROY ON MOMS"

Jill, you asked whether we had any "nice motherly figures"
in Disney's animated future.
Wait until you see next summer's "The Lion King," and
Kimba's mother. She's quite lovely.

We're sorry for this hassle. We not only have no control over it, but our hosts won't even give us a list of the "forbidden" words or phrases. So, if you get one of these messages, let us know and we will try to figure out what the "offending" term was.

I want to emphasize that this is nothing to do with any word filter we've set for the Hall of Fire; we have only three filtered words here, C, N, and F.
“There, peeping among the cloud-wrack above a dark tor high up in the mountains, Sam saw a white star twinkle for a while. The beauty of it smote his heart, as he looked up out of the forsaken land, and hope returned to him. For like a shaft, clear and cold, the thought pierced him that in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach.”

Wow there is a whole Kimba controversy.
Who would have thought?
If Osamu Tezuka is the father of anime, and I know one of the original shows, then that is like being old enough to have seen the original Steamboat Willie.

goes off to cry

Nothing Disney does surprises me though. I mean they killed Banbi's mother.

I saw Tales from Earthsea a couple of weeks ago. I haven't read the books so, I don't know how faithful the film adaptation was to them; but, as a fantasy adventure, it was OK. And, it was definitely very beautifully done. Goro Miyazaki is definitely following his father's footsteps.

Yay, an anime thread! Here's the ones I've seen (in no order):

Gundam Wing - the dubs are much better than the subs, I think. The plot is nice, though Relena has to be the most annoying fictional character I've ever seen on TV. Luckily she's only part backstory; the actual Gundam pilots are much better. The ending was sort of a let down; you'd have to see the movie sequel (Endless Waltz).

D.N. Angel: it's a shoujo-anime, as you can tell with focus on romance (and some boy/boy innuendo, like CPR, and the same two boys being forced to play the male and female roles in a romantic play :D ), though there's action as well. It's not a 'great' anime, though you could call it 'cute'; it's my guilty pleasure, and I like it. The dubs are the worst I've ever heard for an anime, but the original Jap. voices subbed are really good.

Neon Genesis Evangelion: one of the best animes I've ever seen. True, it has giant mecha, but there's so many psychological, theological and philosophical undertones that make it so much more than the average anime. Plus the action and imagery are awesome (as well as the soundtrack) - I remember being scared as (TOS violation) when I saw the giant Angel (that's what it's called, though it was terrifying) in the first episode. You should watch it subbed, though, as the dubs are awful, but each Japanese seiyuu conveys their character's voice and emotions really well (and not over-the-top).

Death Note: really gripping and suspenseful, it raises a lot of moral questions about what's right and what's wrong. If you don't like the first episode (I didn't), see the second as well before writing it off - I did, and was hooked. I've only seen it subbed; they just started to air it on US TV dubbed, I think.

Fullmetal Alchemist: another good anime, with an awesome plotline. There's literally only one filler episode in all 50-or-so episodes, unlike D.N. Angel, which meanders a little. Death Note and Evangelion don't have filler episodes either. FMA had awesome philosophical undertones, and the revelations in the last few episodes (I won't spoil them) shocked and satisfied me so much I thought I was watching Lost for a moment. But it ends with a major cliffhanger; you have to see the movie sequel (Conqueror of Shamballa) to cope, literally. This is another anime where the English dubs are better than the Jap. subs.

Ones I've been recommended to see:
tengen toppa gurren lagann
code geass
bleach
weiss kreuz
tsubasa (chronicles)?
ergo proxy
blood+
elfen lied
monster
trinity blood

I thought about Bleach, but I heard it has a lot of filler episodes, and there're plenty of episodes out right now; I'd probably prefer to start on something less time-consuming. I'm used to animes with 20 to 50 episodes, not over 145! :help:

There are a few filler episodes... About one in 8 would be my guess, but the twists and turns are fantastic...

Okay, I gave into the hype and started watching Naruto. I didn't like it at first, but it's growing on me. I've heard bad things about the dubs, though, and don't look forward to whichever episode when the subs start being replaced.

The thing with Bleach fillers is ... Skip them!!! That is what I did/do. The long string of fillers is 64 - 102 or 103. Skip!!!!! I think before that there are only one or 2 fillers so you are good. After a whole like 2 seasons of fillers, they manage to keep it down to 4 or 5 in a row, which they really have to do since they are right on the heels of the manga.

I haven't watched Naruto (nevah!!!!!)

But Tsubasa (Resevoir Chronicles) is related to xxxHolic.

Since I have an anime and manga pimp (since high school) I have managed to read a lot of manga's before watching the anime. Death Note and Bleach I am currently watching. xxxHolic, Cardcaptors, Fruits basket and Bleach (Japanese release), I am currently reading. (My local library is well stocked with manga, unlike my cable subscription when it comes to anime.) Mecha anime is not my thing sorry. Fullmetal Alchemist. I haven't tried that but I just don't "get" it I guess.

About EarthSea I have not seen the anime (although I want to see that and Witchblade). I hope it's nothing like the miniseries on SciFi which the author of Earth Sea hated with a passion!!.

EDIT: I would love to give Shonen Omniyouji a try too.
