I wonder if "hard mode" is actually easy mode. Because I've gotten more 2s and 3s since I switched to the so-called hard mode.

The main problem I anticipate is if I have 4 correct letters with multiple possibilities with the unused letters. Then I would just have to trust to luck rather than skill.

Inanna I hate it when that happens. I've done that with Spelling Bee from time to time.

Jude, for my purposes, (keeping my mind moving, strategizing) I can't see the benefit of hard mode.

The difficult thing about hard mode, at least for me, is that it forces me to think longer about each guess, even when I have limited information to work from. When I could just spam out additional words for the sole purpose of checking for the presence of other letters, it was easier to zero in on the correct word. The number of guesses was the same or (frequently) greater, but the total time spent on each game was less.

Okay, here's where Hard Mode proves to be a drawback - if I didn't use hard mode I could have eliminated some of the remaining letters and solved it on the fifth or sixth try.

Jude, that's the way I view it (hard mode). It isn't just solving it in fewer moves, but being able to use strategy. There are those sets of words (like joist, hoist, foist, moist) where it becomes a guessing game rather than using strategy.
