Jean-Luc Godard, 1930-2022

The passing of French/Swiss filmmaker Jean-Luc Godard today at the age of 91 should be noted. He was the last surviving leader of the hugely influential French New Wave (Nouvelle vague) of the late 1950s and early 1960s in which a number of young film critics were so dissatisfied with what they viewed as a stale post-war "cinéma de papa" that they decided to become filmmakers themselves to show what they thought movies should be. Godard is probably still best-known for his 1960 debut feature film, Breathless (À bout de souffle), starring Jean-Paul Belmondo and Jean Sebert (who are pictured below) -- Roger Ebert later wrote of that work that "modern movies begin here" -- but a number of other films he made in the 1960s influenced the course of moviemaking -- Quentin Tarantino's production company is named for a 1960s Godard film -- and his later films and writings on film are cherished by some hardcore cineastes.
