I actually disagree that it doesn't matter, I just don't think it will matter in the way that Trump thinks that it will. It will almost certainly provide additional evidence for Willis to use in the case, and it may lead to additional charges, and perhaps even additional defendants, if there is some report that Trump points to that is produced by someone not already charged in the case.

ETA: Marshall talks about this press conference as if it is about what Trump believes. But what Trump has announced is that he is going to provide proof that he was right all along, not just make some representations that he believes that he was right. Not the same thing.

Apparently, former Trump lawyer Ty Cobb agrees with me!

Former Trump WH lawyer Ty Cobb on Trump promising to release a “large complex, detailed, but irrefutable report on the presidential election fraud”:

“There’s a good chance that whatever document he produces ends up as evidence against him. It could even end up as the basis for an obstruction count against the author because it’s likely to be fiction and solely for the purpose of contaminating the jury pool.”

Hugo Lowell
@hugolowell
New: Fulton County DA Fani Willis has asked a judge to set a March 4, 2024 trial date for Trump and 18 co-defendants over attempts to subvert the 2020 election in the state of the Georgia
Of course, that conflicts with the currently scheduled trial in NY (which is set for 3 weeks later on March 25, 2024), but apparently that doesn't matter to her.

I like Josh Marshall's argument here about why that doesn't matter. It's not only that believing a false thing doesn't give you permission to commit crimes. It's also that:
Trump doesn’t think of truth or lies the way you or I do. Most imperfect people, which is to say all of us, exist in a tension between what we believe is true and what is good for or pleasing to us. If we have strong character we hew closely to the former, both in what we say to others and what we say to ourselves. The key to understanding Trump is that it’s not that he hews toward the latter. It’s that the tension doesn’t exist. What he says is simply what works for him. Whether it’s true is irrelevant and I suspect isn’t even part of Trump’s internal dialog. It’s like asking an actor whether she really loved her husband like she claimed in her blockbuster movie or whether she was lying. It’s a nonsensical question. She was acting.
Trump literally worshiped at the church of Norman Vincent Peale. If a person has ever read any of Peale's writings, they might understand Trump's thought process a bit better. Peale wrote a rather famous (infamous?) book called, 'The Power of Positive Thinking' and it's what he preached in his church, to the consternation and disapproval of the hierarchy of his church. The Wikipedia article on this is quite interesting and there has been much written about it, especially the critiques both psychological and theological.

If Trump truly believed his claims, he should go to court & swear under oath, something I'm guessing he'll not do. He'd rather manipulate the court of public opinion which doesn't have such restrictions.

In my opinion? Yes, it should.

Or at least most of them. A number of them are still just listed as "false elector" or give several possibilities for who it might be.

Jonathan Karl
@jonkarl
Coming up on
@GMA
— Multiple sources tell ABC News Trump’s legal advisors have told him that holding such a press conference with dubious claims of voter fraud will only complicate his legal problems. They have asked him to cancel it.

Reportedly, the press conference will not happen, because (reportedly) all of his attorneys threatened to quit if he did it.

You don't say? Hmm. I'm guessing those lawyers would advise him to bring all of that 'conclusive' evidence to exonerate him in a court of law. Oh.. that pesky 'under oath' thing could get in the way...

Glad to see they have the sense to know when to tell him he's wrong! Too many have failed to do that because they don't want to get on the wrong side of him.

I believe he has had attorneys tell him he's wrong, that's why he ends up with nutters like Sydney Powell. It's a problem of his own making.

Is $200,000 bond really much of a deterrent for someone who claims to be a billionaire?

No, but the other restrictions are quite restrictive.
