What does (9, 4) mean?

It means the answer is two words, the first is nine letters long, the second, four.

Is that EXACTLY how the clue was written? No punctuation marks, no lowercase letters? :scratch:

I'm wondering if the last two letters stand for e.g. (example) which is a frequently used abbreviation in crossword clues.

Normally one might know a few letters of the answer because they will have solved intersecting clues. ;)

Think about the second clue. Does it mean that a semicolon would serve the customer? Or that a semicolon would serve the clue?
