Indeed! I remember now -- he sang it with Weir and the rest of the Dead backing him up. Utterly fantastic! It seemed spontaneous, because I don't recall that Dylan was onstage for the first verse or so. Yeah, definitely a highlight. :)

Probably the first great song that Bob wrote was a song dedicated to his own hero, and his direct predesessor as America's Songsmith:

V., have you seen the Scorsases documentary on Dylan?

It ran on PBS a couple of months ago.

Brilliant!

I'll be back if I can think of anything intelligent to say about Dylan.

What I can say is that he spoke to my generation as no other could. Or did.

I still listen to him. And he's still relevant.

I get chills whenever I hear any version of All Along the Watchtower. Jimi's is my fave (he got it at a deep, deep level that comes out in his guitar work on it), but the song is damn near a gimme for any halfway decent singer. It's one of Dylan's shortest--and densest--lyrics:

"There must be some way out of here," said the joker to the thief,
"There's too much confusion, I can't get no relief.
Businessmen, they drink my wine, plowmen dig my earth,
None of them along the line know what any of it is worth."

"No reason to get excited," the thief, he kindly spoke,

Is there a Dylan song that has not been covered by someone else? And how often is it that the cover version is more familiar to us than the original? I know that’s the case with All Along the Watchtower, at least for me.

Here’s a site that list some of the different covers of Dylan songs. At current count the list has 5870 covers of 350 different Dylan songs by 2791 artists. And it doesn’t claim to be complete.

Here’s one that I’ve been listening too recently, covered by the bluegrass band Nickel Creek on their most recent album. And they do just a heartbreakingly beautiful version of it too!

I have indeed seen it. We rented it on DVD. I agree that it is brilliant. I love the way he uses Bob himself as the de facto narrator. And the diverse interviews are really great, as are the live footage. It really paints a wonderful picture. (And can I say how wonderful it is to be able to be responding to a post of yours here. :love: :love: :love:)

I've read an interview with Bob in which he states that after Jimi did it he (Bob) felt like he was covering Jimi when he played the song, because Hendrix made it his own so much. The Dead also did a very incindiary version. When Dylan toured with the Dead in 1987 the versions they did together (including the one documented on the live album "Dylan and the Dead") were absolutely transcendent. When Bob would growl "the wind began to howl" and then Garcia would tear into his guitar like no one else could (no, not even Jimi) ... wow!

I keep reading those All Along the Watchtower lyrics trying to get the underlying idea but it continues to elude me. Any ideas on what it means?

Yov, I think you highlight a problem with a thread like this, because the lyrics by themselves don't capture the underlying feeling of the song. Because that is the key -- it is not about ideas so much as feeling. And I would be completely hardpressed to make any effort at describing what that feeling is. If I had to chose one word, it would be "alienation". But that is oh so inadequate. I can only suggest that you find a copy of Jimi performing it, or the version of Bob performing it with The Band on the live album "Before the Flood" or the version on the "Dylan and the Dead" album that I referred to before.

In the case of that song in particular, yovargas, it helps to have some context about the specifics of time and place when it was composed, both in the larger historical sense and in Mr. Zimmerman's own life.

I'll let you have the joy of discovering that on your own, if you are interested in looking into it. Suffice it to say there was a lot going on, and more than a few people have made some interesting speculations. :)
