Not being able to drop in every day makes it impossible to keep track on all the newcomers... :(

But, seems that at least Brian, Squiddy, Lurker and Lali have joined since my last visit - welcome all!  And, I think I saw Kushana's name on the memberlist too... 8)

In some way related to this topic: Is the St. Lucia's Day celebrated in any way where you live? For some reason, it became a tradition in Sweden, and from there it spread to Finland, especially among the Swedish speaking part of the population. Here, the tradition is that, the biggest Swedish speaki...

I wonder if it would work on one of the Maia? Did it turn Sauron invisible? Would it have turned Gandalf invisible? If it could not turn Gandalf invisible, is that one of the reasons he refused it, that it would give too much away? I wonder what effect the ring would have on an ent? I think that th...

OK, this is already from a week back, but: Rowanberry, there was a book published last year by an American journalist concerning a year of interviews with Europeans about their views on the EU and America and future relations between the two entities. One of the things he emphasized was the incredul...

Semprini , that was more than just well said. I think that you caught something very essential about Fëanor. The reason I hesitate from using the "tragic" description is because Fëanor's downfall (due in large part to his flaws, as well as can be argued the morally ambiguous ch...

Well, Tolkien himself described Tom somewhere as "the spirit of the English countryside" (not exactly in those words, I'm typing this from memory, but close). :) We've been recently discussing the chapters that deal with Tom in the TORC VTSG. Since many (any?) of you don't visit that forum...

It's almost 26 years since I took this photo, in January 1980.

For me, Fëanor has always been a tragic character, rather than evil. He was a genius, bound for greatness, one of a kind; even the Valar acknowledge that, and it also comes out in Gandalf's words about him. He must also have been very charismatic; that is shown well in the relative easiness of how h...

I hope that I'm not rambling too much... As this is a Tolkien board: Do any of you notice parallels between Quan Yin and Nienna? So great was her sorrow, as the Music unfolded, that her song turned to lamentation long before its end, and the sound of mourning was woven into the themes of the World b...

I'm not going to actually participate in this discussion, because I've noticed that in discussing religious matters, I rarely can put my thoughts into words without offending anybody. :( But, I'd just like to comment on this: Whistler and I have talked many times about the anti-religion trend in the...

This is an interesting discussion, to which I unfortunately didn't go in very deeply at b77, although I've been interested in Irish mythology for a long time. I hope that I'll have a better opportunity to follow it here, although like Voronwë, I'm afraid that I can't contribute very much, just becau...

The Council of Elrond Sindarin course to which Eru linked is quite good, if you really have time to delve into it; it's one of the things that originally drew me to that site, but alas, I've been all too pressed for time to really take up with it. And, for Quenya, the Ardalambion course can hardly b...

When I was a kid, my very favourite Christmas album was one by Harry Belafonte. I still get the chills when I hear "Mary's Boy Child". I've only got the Boney M disco cover version of that piece - although, that's a memory of my youth. :D And, I've heard the Belafonte version on the radio...

I know. :( He has sunk really low.

But, many of his past achievements still stand - like the Christmas Album, which I like just because of the campiness of it. :D
