Voronwë's explanation of Baggins is quite convincing, but wether Tolkien invented the name of Baggins from Lancastrian dialect or not, it was an actual surname before his time. In the 1901 census we have: french polisher David Baggins 54 years old and his wife Martha, living in Buckingham county. An...

Yes, albeit rather obscure. In the Bolger family tree that didn't make it into the appedices but is published in HoME 12 we find a Nina Lightfoot married to Theobald Bolger (they're the parents of the Wilibald Bolger who married Bilbo's 2nd cousin Prisca Baggins)

I found this in a Tobacco Timeline on tobacco.org: During Charles' reign (1660-1685), the growing of tobacco in England, except for small lots in physic gardens, is forbidden so as to preserve the taxes coming in from Virginian imports.. 1911: Tobacco -growing is allowed in England for the first tim...

I don't know about England, but tobacco was grown in Denmark in the 18th Century  It was taken up again during the war. The homegrown tobacco was renowned for being terrible, after the liberation the stock was burned as it was unsellable. A conversation recorded by a contemporary danish humor...

Sandyfoot and Barefoot aren't hobbit-names so it don't amount to much that you can find them in Kentucky ;) I looked in the online census for England and Wales for 1901, and tried all the hobbit-names of the Shire I could think of: Baggins: 11 Banks: 300+ Boffin: 232 Bolger: 300+ Bracegirdle: 300+ B...

So the hobbits are from California? And they're barefoot treehuggers and smoking strange weeds.

OMG Hobbits are hippies!!

Kentuckian Hobbits

This is a comment to the "New theory about Tom Bombadil"-thread by BrianIsSmilingatYou, I'm starting a new thread because it doesn't have any bearing on the main point of that thread, and I don't want to high-jack it. In that thread Brian quote from http://www.etymonline.com/columns/tolkie...

Thanks Rowan :)

I don't remember seeing that at the Moot, if I had known there would be questions, I'd have paid more attention.

I much prefer Baynes' black & white drawings in Farmer Giles, they got a medieval look that I quite enjoy.

To be honest, I only know Pauline Baynes from my illustrated Farmer Giles, I've heard that her hobbits and elves are less than perfect, but I haven't seen for myself.

Maybe you're right about his approval Mith, I would like to see the relevant quote for myself though.

It's entirely unfair to continue to feel uncomfortable towards a group based on what was doctrine but is not anymore. Not only do I think it is unfair, but silly. You can't let the past (in this case, the past prior to your birth) dictate how you feel today. Stances change, times change and observe...

Well, I haven’t seen the movie, but I did read the book again (all of this discussion peaked my interest - it took me all of four days to read it this time, compared to the two months it took me to claw my way through Foucault’s Pendulum. Not sure what that says about me, in fact I don’t really wan...

One, it was clear at least to the characters (and thus author) that this discovery would make Jesus simply a man, and not divine. That's quite interesting, is that view also in the book? In Holy Blood Holy Grail , the authors conclude that their theories (or rather hoax) doesn't say anything about ...

I really doubt that any nation in the world today can claim to fulfil all the human rights. :( These two articles for example are a problem in most countries Article 23. (1) Everyone has the right to work, to free choice of employment, to just and favourable conditions of work and to protection agai...

Hi, Parmamaite. I don't believe we've ever had the pleasure of conversing before. :) Hi Cerin :) I think you're right, there's a first for everything. Tolkien approved of this  Not that I don't trust you Pearl, but have you got a source for that?

I like Pauline Baynes works a lot, especially those she did for Farmer Giles. - As can be deduced from my Avatar.

it's okay for you to do the same against the mormons? I do not recall doing that. Please don't put words into my mouth. I do not want to put words in your mouth, but that was how I understood you when you said: ETA: thanks for the links, TED - I must say, they quite confirm my assessment of the sit...
