But a nice guess!
"Spirits in the shape of hawks and eagles flew ever to and from his halls; and their eyes could see to the depths of the seas, and pierce the hidden caverns beneath the world."

Did it get drastically shortened in the translation? If so, I may have found it.

It was shortened, but I wouldn't say drastically.

ETA: by word count it is 2/3 as long as the original.

In that case it's probably not this one:
If thou hadst thy will what wouldst thou reserve? Of all thy realm what dost thou hold dearest?

It is, but only the second sentence! Your turn.
"Spirits in the shape of hawks and eagles flew ever to and from his halls; and their eyes could see to the depths of the seas, and pierce the hidden caverns beneath the world."

Please accept it if you wish. I don't think I'll ever want one again.

Is it about the pipe weed?

You have the exact right spot - this quote specifically refers to Sting though, not the Mithril coat.

"This is Sting. Take it if you like. I shan't want it again, I expect!"

And since i know that's the correct quote I'll go again.

Consider the worst case scenario: There's no point in walking around in the fog.

I figured not, since it would be too obvious. I'm glad I was right!
